Boltz v Universal et al.
The Mills Firm sued five of the largest motion picture studios in the United States on behalf of the deaf and hard of hearing for failing to caption special features. In a landmark settlement approved in the Fall of 2006 affecting the majority of all DVDs released in the U.S.A. over the next five years -- over a billion DVDs – the studios agreed to fully caption not only feature presentations, but special features and bonus materials (outtakes, commentaries, background, etc) on the great majority of DVDs released.
In addition, they agreed to pay a total of $250,000 to three recognized organizations which advocate for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The settlement was praised by deaf advocacy groups, including those which received no funds from it.
